Now, as artists we want everyone to buy everything all at once. We put all of our artworks for sale in a canon and shoot them at everyone hoping one will stick. This is “shotgun marketing”.
DO NOT DO THIS!
What a waste of time. You know what successful artists do to sell? They narrow down their niche and specifically target those people. It’s no secret but how many of us can say we know our specific niche?
We enjoy going into our studios, working with any and all mediums, never knowing what the outcome will be. BUT focusing on one niche, creating a main body of one type of art, will help you to communicate more effectively.
So, what is a niche?
Well, it can be your style, your medium you use, your subject.
To narrow down your niche you need to be specific.
Don’t say “I paint”. Try and say “I create oil seascapes of Devons’ coasts for Homeowners”. This calls to a specific type of audience. Let’s break it down:
“Oil” attracts those who appreciate and value oil paintings over other mediums
“Seascapes” appeal to those who admire this subject
“Devon’s coasts” appeals to those who live in Devon or appreciates Devons’ coastline.
“Homeowners” sets a pricing target market
So let’s begin to break down your niche:
Style
How would you describe it?
Why is it unique?
Why are you using those specific colours?
Are you the only one to use this technique?
Medium
Is it a drawing, painting, photography, etc?
Why do you use this medium?
Do you mix your mediums and why?
Does this medium have a connection to you?
Subject
Cats, animals, trees, seascapes, nature, portraits, etc.
Why are you drawn to these?
Price
Investment art
Affordable art
